I was recently honored to be asked to contribute a chapter to a book entitled, Contemporary Issues in Couples Counseling: A Choice Theory and Reality Therapy Approach. This book was written to legitimize Reality Therapy as a method of counseling for systemic issues. It’s not just for individuals.
This book was written by many counselors who are Reality Therapy Certified, each in their area of expertise. There are chapters about multicultural couples (that’s the one I wrote), relationship recovery after infidelity, recovering from substance abuse, counseling military couples, resolving differences, caregiving couples, when childhood trauma affects the relationship, counseling gay couples, working with celebrity couples, and couples coping with illness. There are also general chapters about Choice Theory/Reality Therapy, an overview of marriage therapy in the US, a chapter on relationship assessment and one about using Reality Therapy with premarital couples. And there is a rare interview with Dr. William Glasser, the founder of Reality Therapy, and his wife.
If you are a counselor, therapist, social worker, psychologist or coach who works with couples and would like to try a new approach, then this is the book for you. It’s also a great book for counseling and social work marriage and family classes.
