The in-class experience for me overall was very reflective and refreshing. The class went through June 16-18th 2023. The day that stood out the most to me was Saturday. Saturday, we had our speaker speak on Mental Freedom. She spoke on many helpful exercises and explained habits many of us have as humans trying to handle stress. It was quite tiring and hard to discuss difficult feelings and experiences with people I did not know. I am a very introverted person, so it is hard for me to open up to strangers. It was easier for me to do the in-class activities by writing them to myself or sharing them with classmates I already knew closely. Doing this felt easier and I could truly answer the questions in a real way so I could get the most out of the class. Some of the main takeaways from the class were learning about stress management techniques, and learning that I am in control of myself so I should not try to control external beings or situations. I also thought it was valuable to learn that I am not owed anything; meaning, that I have every right to ask for what I want, but I should also be prepared to hear a yes or a no. It is important to manage expectations. It is most important to accept life and people as they come, letting go of the need for control is the biggest takeaway for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed our guest speaker, I loved her perspective on stress and how she could spin things to be positive so easily, I aspire to be able to do that one day. The guest speaker gave a very good presentation, and helped me gain a different outlook on my past and actions that I have done that I was not particularly proud of. These actions were also a source of stress, so a positive perspective was able to help me minimize them.

My biggest struggle prior to beginning this course was learning to balance my stress. We were all just beginning our summer when we arrived at our stress management course, and I knew I wanted to work on different ways of managing my stress with the amount of workload I was expecting this summer. The day I found to be the most helpful was Saturday when Kim presented. Her entire lecture from that day was extremely inspiring to me and she made me realize that we all have so much going on. In the beginning of class, I was not expecting to share as much personal information that I did, and I was not expecting to relate to as many people either. One of my favorite lessons I learned from Kim was to go on the hunt for your “GLOW”, the gifts, lessons, opportunities, and wisdom in every situation you are in. My in-class experience was really motivated by her lecture and by the last and final day on Sunday, I was already thinking of ways that I could try to change the outlook of my situations. I would not necessarily say that the amount of stress on my plate has lowered, but I have been able to handle it better now that my mentality has slightly shifted after my experience with this course. Kim also presented us with the “Unconditional Trust Challenge”. I found her website that goes into further detail about what this is and the readings on her site have been very helpful for me. I have found myself revisiting her site twice since we have had class and it has been a reminder for me to continue applying the lessons I have learned.

Though Friday was freeing, Saturday was insightful! Saturday was the day we had a guest speaker talk about mental freedom. The amount of knowledge she shared with us helped change my perspective of life, of human beings, and of the relationships I have with others. And I will say this: by alluding to what mental freedom taught me, I have reduced my stress simply by understanding the six categories we were taught. I say Saturday was insightful because I was able to connect everything about mental freedom to at least one aspect of my life, which verified that these are true and confirmed that they can work, long as we put in the work, too. My favorite part about mental freedom is the unconditional trust challenge; one I have abided by since that day. Because of this challenge, I do not take things so personally anymore because I know that when someone does something, they are doing it for themselves and not for me. Overall, the class was extremely helpful. Not only was the course full of meaningful material and valuable information, but the professor was extremely generous and welcoming and the students were all very respectful and beneficial. I loved the professor and the guest speaker because they provided me with a real life example of the amount of humbleness and peace I aspire to have at some point in my life. This proved to me that being stress free is attainable and I can do it, too. I also enjoyed the students I had in my class, together as a group we made that class! The rapport we had between each other and the respect we had for one another allowed for a class full of vulnerability and connection. If it were not for those values present, I do not think we would have had such a positive experience as the one we did have.

The Stress Management Lab provided me with a powerful strategy that has significantly impacted how I approach life’s adversities: maintaining a positive perspective even in the face of negative events. This valuable lesson was reinforced by a guest speaker. Despite the profound sadness surrounding her husband’s passing, the guest speaker emphasized the importance of recognizing the positive transformations that emerged from this tragic event. She revealed how his death had unexpectedly opened new doors and opportunities in her life. By choosing to focus on the positive outcomes that arose after his passing, she was able to prevent overwhelming stress and find a sense of peace amidst the grief. His passing had opened unforeseen opportunities for her, such as traveling the world, becoming a teacher on this subject, and embracing a parenting style that she deemed best suited for her children’s well-being. Her story served as a reminder that positive thinking does not invalidate the pain of loss or dismiss the grief. Instead, it offers a perspective that allows us to process our emotions in a healthy manner and navigate through the darkest moments with a sense of hope and resilience. Embracing this mindset can aid in alleviating the overwhelming burden of stress that often accompanies such challenging circumstances. In 2021, I personally experienced the profound impact of positive perspective when I faced the loss of my beloved grandfather and my childhood dog Dustie, to illness. The grief and heartbreak I felt were overwhelming, and I found myself crying randomly. The stress of knowing I would never see them again during moments of distress left me anxious and burdened with a heavy feeling of guilt. During the guest speakers time with us, I tried to incorporate her lessons in my own life. I began to consciously seek out the positive aspects of their passing, acknowledging that they were no longer suffering in pain and that they were now at peace. Additionally, I found comfort in knowing that they no longer had to experience loneliness when the family had to handle important obligations that took us away from home. The grief of losing them will always remain, adopting a positive perspective allowed me to find some form of acceptance and strength in knowing that they are in a better place and that I had the privilege of sharing beautiful memories with them. This newfound outlook helped me navigate through the emotional turmoil with greater resilience and a sense of hope for the future. By practicing positive thinking, I could reframe my perspective and focus on the love and joy they brought into my life rather than dwelling solely on the void left by their absence. It helped me cherish the moments we had together, and I embraced gratitude for the profound impact they had on shaping my life. Incorporating positive thinking into my grief journey has allowed me to honor their memories while also finding the courage to move forward. It has taught me that it is okay to grieve and feel the pain of loss, but also essential to acknowledge the blessings and lessons that emerged from the experience. In various aspects of my life, I have come to realize the power of maintaining a positive perspective. When I encounter rough days or challenging situations, I have learned to rely on positive affirmations to lift my spirits. Instead of dwelling solely on difficulties, I consciously remind myself that things can improve and that there is a silver lining even in the darkest moments. For instance, while I may experience anxiety when driving, I shift my focus to the gratitude of having a car that allows me the convenience to travel to and from places whenever I need to. This simple shift in perspective helps me appreciate the privilege of mobility and reminds me of the freedom it grants me. Likewise, despite the struggles I may face in my education, I choose to embrace the blessing of having access to learning opportunities. This positive perspective enables me to recognize the value of education and the potential for personal growth and knowledge.
